Troop 40

The Hudson Valley Council provides information regarding council training on their website, bsahvc.org. More information is also available on the national BSA site www.scouting.org.

Youth Training TOP

Youth leadership training consists of:

  • Junior Leader Training (JLT) - Troop leadership training for the Scouts is provided by the Troop approximately once a year. All Scouts with leadership positions are expected to to attend.
  • National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), is provided by council. It is a week-long leadership skills course for young men who have been elected by members of their Troop to serve as Patrol Leaders, Senior Patrol Leaders or other youth leadership positions. This course, taught by youth for youth, focuses on the fundamentals of good leadership, such as skills of motivating people, communication, identifying and using resources, and problem solving. Skills related to planning, effective teaching, and sharing leadership are also presented.

    Objectives of NYLT:

    • To give participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop program.
    • To give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops.
    • To create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience the Scouting program at its best.
    • To enhance the relationship between the participant and his Scoutmaster.
    • To have fun while learning! and is a weeklong camp in the summer for eligible Scouts to help them in their troop leader positions.

    Each year Troop sends the SPL and ASPL's to NYLT. The Troop covers the full cost for the SPL and half the cost for the ASPL's.

  • Den Chief training is provided by council (usually at Nov. Pow-Wow), and the Scoutmaster.
Adult Training TOP

Adult training consists of:

  • Fast Start**.
  • Youth Protection Training (YPT)** must be renewed every 2 years.
  • 'This is Scouting' (replaces New Leader Essentials - NLE) is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting.**
  • Weather Hazards**
  • Safe Swim Defense**
  • Safety Afloat**
  • Scoutmaster/ Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training (SASLST)
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leaders Skills (IOLS)
  • Troop Committee Challenge**
  • Woodbadge

** courses can be taken online at www.olc.scouting.org.

Fast Start and Youth protection training is required of all adult troop leaders. NLE, SASLST and IOLS are encouraged.

BSA also provides a Leader Roundtables and University of Scouting where you can take individual courses or complete a BS, Masters, and Ph.D. in Scouting.
